So the husband and I decided on a weekend away together. Alone. Without our son. Our little man is just over 2 years old, he has been away with us many times on breaks since he was born but with the return of his Godmother from overseas who wanted to spend the weekend with him we felt it was the perfect opportunity to have some couple time. We decided on Airlie Beach because we live in Townsville and as we only had a few days we didn’t want to spend most of it traveling. It’s about a 3 hour car drive.
Since having a child we have always rented apartments, it can be a bit much to expect a toddler to eat out for every meal, and let’s face it – some mornings you just don’t want to get up, get dressed and go to a café for breakfast – sometimes you just want to sit on the balcony and have a coffee with some vegemite on toast in your PJ’s. In saying that, my husband and I do like nice things so we rarely look at anything under 4 ½ star. Below is a list of out “Must Haves”:

We arrived at Peppers Airlie Beach, our first impressions was how big the resort was. All apartments have ocean views with a balcony (tick). We were checked in quickly and efficiently by reception (tick) and most importantly they brought out a little in house brochure with some Peppers Specials. They didn’t do the hard sell; they just mentioned the popular items. As soon as we were settled into the room we ordered the Tides Restaurant Special which is a bucket of Tiger Prawns and an Icy Cold Great Northern Beer (you could change it for a wine if you preferred) and we sat on the balcony with our feet up and tucked into the tiger prawns, they were amazing! We had a lovely evening, the courtesy bus took us to the restaurant we were booked into on the main drag and we caught a cab home (which cost $5 exactly!) we could have walked but we were too full from our meals.
Breakfast was included in our stay, so we walked up to Tides Restaurant and had a hot breakfast, the view from the restaurant is wonderful and you get the full sea breeze. We spent the day out at Hideaway Bay and Dingo Beach, we returned and ordered the Cocktail Passport which is 10 x cocktails for $99.00 (this has no time limit, you can use it for the whole weekend) – this was plenty for us to share and we started our cocktails by the infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. The pool is not huge and we thought it might have been bigger as it seemed out of proportion with the size of the resort but then you have to remember you are staying in Airlie Beach with the some of the best beaches in the world down the road from you so your hardly going to swim in a pool when you can sink your toes into the white sand and swim in the aqua ocean.
I can’t say enough about the staff, wherever we were they would offer to drive us in the golf buggy back to our rooms – we ordered coffees every morning from the restaurant (I got to have my morning coffee before I face anyone!) and because they were relatively quiet they delivered it to our room for us just as a nice gesture.
The staff greeted us by name and the meal we had at the restaurant the last night we were there was delicious (special mention of the Seafood Platter for two). Would we take our son there next time? Probably. I am thinking though that we might keep this place for ourselves.
